Small Area Fair Market Rents from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development: the 40th-percentile gross rent (rent plus utilities) for standard-quality units in each ZIP code of a metro area. They are a reliable like-for-like gauge of what neighborhoods cost relative to each other; asking rents for brand-new luxury buildings will run higher, and long-held leases lower. ZIP codes are used as the closest stable stand-in for neighborhoods; in the largest metros each ZIP is labeled with the communities it covers, and elsewhere ZIPs are shown directly, with the map making it easy to find the area you mean.
